Rushed trip for cigarette lighter cost four their lives

IF Jessica Camidge, Richard Wells, Will Manton, and Samantha Enright had been able to find a cigarette lighter they may never have embarked on the drive that led to their deaths.

The four young people were killed about 1.20am yesterday when the car they were in went out of control and crashed into a tree on the Pacific Highway at Newrybar.

Ms Camidge, 22 of Ewingsdale, Mr Wells, 19 of West Ballina, Mr Manton, 20 of Ballina, and Ms Enright, 17 of Skennars Head, all died at the scene.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash. Yesterday they said they believe they had tried to overtake a truck across double lines immediately before the crash.

Investigators are also looking at speed and alcohol as possible factors contributing to the tragedy.

Ballina police Inspector Nicole Bruce said Ms Camidge, who was in the driver's seat, had a suspended licence.

The four had been driving from Ewingsdale to Ballina when the crash happened.

"A friend of theirs told police they were going to Ballina to get a cigarette lighter," Insp Bruce said.
