Frank Peniguel’s bowls into the record books

Frank Peniguel is two thirds of the way towards setting the first record in the Guinness Book of Records for playing at the most bowls clubs in a calendar year.

The bowler from Daylesford in Victoria has been on the road since January 10 playing at between two and four clubs a day.

He is more than seven months into his record attempt and wasn't giving much away with his tally when he spoke to the Daily News.

Peniguel said when he started out on his bowls playing safari in five states that he hoped to play at between 600 and 900 clubs in 12 months.

When he first thought about going for a record, he found there was no record to beat and worked with staff at the Guinness Book of Records office in London to set up criteria for the record.

The record must be set by an individual in 12 months and each game must be witnessed,

He has to play a minimum of 10 ends, but some clubs won't allow players to join in for a short game so they can play at the most possible clubs in a day.

He isn't putting money on how long he will hold the record.

Peniguel will set the initial record as he was first to start in January.

Chris Thomas is the second bowler on the road trying to break the record and is on the Southern Downs this week while another group is starting in quest of whatever the record is with funding from a group of 10 clubs.

Peniguel has played the game for 13 years after working in film, television, retail and advertising during his working career.

He can't name the best places he has played.

"There are too many places I love," he said.
