'Region missing funds for dementia'

REGIONAL parts of Queensland such as the Fraser Coast are missing out on vital services for dementia sufferers, Alzheimer's Australia has said.

Alzheimer's Australia Queensland chief Victoria Beedle said the organisation had entered a budget submission for $500 million over five years from the Federal Government for dementia awareness, diagnosis, support and research.

Ms Beedle said funding was vital for services such as the Alzheimer's Australia community centre in Maryborough.

"Without adequate funding from the Federal Government regional areas will not have the services they need to support people with dementia and their families," she said.

"Those people who live in regional areas now already know the lack of specialists like geriatricians makes diagnosis difficult and home-based services struggle to meet demand."

She highlighted the results of a report released at the end of last year which showed Wide Bay was ranked seventh in Queensland for dementia prevalence.

The report also showed the Hinkler electorate was predicted to become the number one electorate in Queensland for dementia rates by 2030 with an expected 6138 cases.

The Hinkler electorate was predicted to have the highest rates of dementia prevalence across Australia by 2050.
