Bike post goes viral and lucky young girl rides away happy

THERE are a lot of children who've sent letters to Santa asking for a bike for Christmas.

So when Toowoomba woman Jo Lewis posted online that she wanted to give away a bike to a family, it didn't take long for the post to go viral.

"I would like to give this bike away to someone who is struggling this Christmas," she wrote.

"Not someone who wastes money on cigarettes but to someone whose kids really need it."

The post was soon shared and liked hundreds of times.

Ms Lewis said she decided to give away the bike after reading a heartbreaking story.

"I saw a post about a lady whose bike was stolen and it made me think," she said.

"I shouldn't be selling this I should give it to someone who will not be as lucky as my kids are."

She said giving away a bike was not as simple as she'd first thought it would be.

"It seems giving away a bike is harder than it sounds," she said.

Many of the people who contacted her were not "doing it tough", they just wanted it, she said.

She contacted Aussie Helpers for drought relief and thought about donating it to a toys appeal.

Finally she settled on the Schefe family.

"I understand their little girl was in an accident and almost drowned," Ms Lewis said.

"She spent six weeks in hospital and her dad lost his job so I'm sure they will appreciate it.

"I can tell they are genuine and were suggested by a lovely lady."

Residents praised Ms Lewis for her altruistic act.

Ren Jennings said: "I just wanted to say, what a lovely person."

Kristine Lincoln agreed.

"What a lovely thing to do, I hope good things come back to you."

Shane Spencer said it would brighten up the life of a child.

"That's a kind thought, it will make some child happy."

Nic Spencer said it could help a needy family during Christmas.

"What a great thing to do for someone who is struggling to find something for their children."
