Free program to prevent chronic illness
THEY SAY prevention is better than a cure, but changing unhealthy habits before it's too late is easier said than done.
My Health for Life is a leading program in preventative health that aims to help Warwick residents at risk of chronic illnesses nip risky routines in the bud before they progress to more serious things.
Program facilitator and psychologist at the Centre For Healthy Living Jan Gudkovs said the free program was innovative in its approach to combating lifestyle diseases.
"I think there is a huge need for this in our community and we know there are a lot of people at risk, especially among people between the age of 35 and 45,” she said.
"This program is trying to prevent those people from progressing along to a position where they actually get a condition like heart disease or stroke.”
The program is structured around group sessions that help participants make changes to their life that will set them in good stead for the future.
"Often people really want to do things differently, but we know it is actually quite hard to change behaviours and change your life style,” Ms Gudkovs said.
"It's not telling people what they have got to do, it's about supporting them. A lot of the support comes through the other members of the group.”
Small group sizes of about 6 - 8 people will make for an intimate and encouraging environment.
Ms Gudkovs and co-facilitator and dietician Elia Faa will be taking registrations on February 1 and 3 at the bottom of the travelator at Rose City Shoppingworld.
