Freestone book to be launched
THE most interesting she has ever written is how the author of 'Freestone: a mostly true history' describes her new book.
The book will be launched at the Freestone Hall on Sunday, documenting major events in the town's history and telling quirky stories.
Canadian author Krista Bjorn was awarded the task of putting the book together and delving deeper to find stories throughout the town's history, with the help of several others.
"I did most of the research myself, digging through websites and newspaper archives," Ms Bjorn said.
"It was a bit overwhelming at first but then it became fascinating.
"I loved the stories of people who faced hardship and overcame it.
"There were some really inspiring and moving stories - I thought it would be very clinical but I found myself getting emotionally attached, laughing at some of the characters or getting upset over what happened."
An extract from the book tells the story of the Hammonds boys, who only had one pair of pants between them:
"Graham Shelley remembered one of the Hammonds boys arriving at school without his brother. The next day the brother arrived without him. When the teacher asked the brother why he hadn't been at school the day before he replied, "It was Ad's turn for the pants."
