Freestone marks 150th anniversary
HOT on the heels of the sesquicentenary of local government in Warwick, the district and former township of Freestone will now celebrate its 150th anniversary.
Freestone 150th committee member Steven Turner said the celebrations had been a long time in the making.
"Preparations have been going on for about four years now," Mr Turner said.
"Model train maker John Love, from Brisbane, has spent that time building a layout of the Freestone area to will go on display, although it's not to scale because there was a lot we wanted to fit in."
"The celebrations will be held on Saturday, May 5, and start at 10am and run into the evening with a dinner dance.
Other highlights include bus tours around the area for a gold coin donation, a branding post on which people are invited to burn their current or old brands and children's activities."
Mr Turner was sure Freestone history would provide a lot of interest to those who attended.
"It used to be quite a bustling little place," he said. "Now it is rural, quiet, supported by cattle and dairy and is still beautiful."
