Fresh face dives in deep end

WHEN the Killarney Pool throws open its doors for the start of the swimming season this weekend, a new face will be behind the counter.

Shirley Bloomfield has taken on the new lease for the pool, which takes effect this Saturday October 1.

Being the last weekend of school holidays, Ms Bloomfield said she hoped there would be a large turn-up of swimmers.

"Hopefully we'll get a few coming through," she said.

Current lessees Bill and Linda Lacey have been in the role for one year, having taken it on from October 1 2010.

When the summer floods came through, the pool was forced to close for substantial periods.

Ms Bloomfield will run the pool with the help of Diane Hancock. She said she had wanted to take on the lease for a number of years.

"I've been involved with the pool for 30 years," she said. "I used to lease it years ago and the last three years I didn't get it. I'm looking forward to taking it on again."

Ms Bloomfield said she looked forward to spending time at the Killarney pool.

"I'm a local and I like seeing the children enjoying themselves," she said.

"It's a great form of sport for the kids and it's a good thing to keep them enjoying themselves."
