Fresh talent for senior cricket

THE Warwick cricket pitch is set to take a thumping as the Southern Downs boys return to a new season.

Warwick Cricket Association committee president Michael Bourke said bowlers were the movers and shakers during the opening round of the Total Cool Solutions competition which kicked off at the weekend. Three matches were played on Saturday and one game yesterday.

“Maryvale-Condamine defeated the Sovereign Animals by 60 runs at Slade Park on Saturday. Batting first, Maryvale-Condamine was dismissed for 151 runs with Jason Stekette top scoring with 53 runs,” Bourke said.

“Nicholls took 3-25 off six overs. He received good support from Scott McCulloch with 3-21 off six overs.

“In reply the Sovereign Animals scored 91 runs with Laurence Wagner (21 not out) and Dave Nicholls (20) combining in a partnership of 34 runs.

“Paul Bourke took 2-6 off six overs and Rob Lindsay 2-14 off four overs for Maryvale-Condamine.”

Yesterday saw the RSL Diggers play Killarney, who won the toss and sent the Diggers to the crease with bat in hand.

RSL Diggers secretary Colin O’Brien said new blood in the team boosted momentum with the likes of juniors Patrick Gribbin and Scott See.

“This was their first game with us in the senior competition,” O’Brian said.

“Pat Gribbon got four wickets for 18 runs and Scott See got four wickets for one run.

“Early in the season the pitch isn’t that good so the bowlers dominated.

“Our best was Brett McEvoy who got 50 runs.”
