ZOEY HOPKINS was singing before she could speak – humming along to nursery rhymes with her mum in the car at just nine months old.

She is also the granddaughter of famous conductor John Hopkins and comes from a family of musicians and artists, so it’s no surprise she is also a talented musician.

Her family knows it, as do the regulars at the Bangalow Pub Brackets and Jam night, and now the rest of Australia is finding out too.

Three of the 16-year-old Byron High School student’s songs are now online and being listened to by hundreds as part of Triple J’s Unearthed High competition.

The competition, open to students across the country, gives the winner the chance to fly to Sydney and professionally record their song, airplay on Triple J, and a gig at their school by The Living End.

Zoey’s song, Words of a God, has been receiving some rave reviews and recently made it to number 15 on the overall Unearthed High charts. It also spent a week at number five on the indie charts, was played 500 times and has been downloaded 60 times.

The great reviews will help the Bangalow teenager get noticed by the Triple J judges who will select the overall winner.

Zoey, who hopes to study music at university, said the competition was a huge opportunity for her to get noticed and achieve her goal torecord a full-length album.

Other locals featuring on theUnearthed High website include Mullumbimby’s Eleea Navarro and Byron Bay’s As We Stand and Ben Meek. Winners will be announced on July 25.
