Friday to lead U21 netballers at national champs
BERYL Friday has joined Southern Downs netballers Laura Geitz and Clare McMeniman in a long line of current Firebirds players captaining their state at national level.
New Mission Queensland Firebirds recruit Beryl Friday will lead the 21U Queenslanders at the National Netball Championships being held on the Sunshine Coast in March.
Current Firebirds Captain Laura Geitz led the 21U team in 2006, Clare McMeniman and Laura Clemesha have also captained past Queensland teams.
Friday will be joined by Vice-Captains and fellow Queensland Fusion teammates Madeline McAuliffe and Hulita Haukinima.
Haukinima captained the 19U Queensland team to a National Championship victory in 2014.
With the nationals being held on home soil and less than three weeks away Friday said her team is looking to improve on their previous campaign finish of fourth place.
"I am really excited about being named captain," Friday said.
"It is the first time I have been named captain of any team so I am hoping I can lead our team to victory, especially hosting nationals in our home state," Friday said.
There are no Warwick players in the 21U team which is a change as Stephanie O'Brien has been a regular in recent years before graduating to senior ranks. She is now playing top-level netball in Brisbane.
Meanwhile in Warwick netball, senior fixtures are underway at WIRAC each Monday and Tuesday night.
The 21U Nationals kicks off Tuesday March 10 - Sunday March 15 and is being held at the Caloundra Indoor Stadium, North Street Golden Beach.
