Friday night footy fever returns to Warwick

RUGBY LEAGUE: Warwick footy fans are in for a rare treat this week as Friday night football returns to Father Ranger Oval.

It's been a few years since it's happened and the club is excited according to president David O'Leary.

O'Leary said Warwick should be looking forward to the opportunity to cheer their team home on a Friday night.

"There's been a big push on Facebook, getting the word out there and I see that it's getting lots of hits, which is great," he said.

"We'd love to see everyone come down to support the boys and the club."

The game was originally scheduled for Saturday but opponent Goondiwindi approached Warwick to request a change, due to a clash with a race meet.

O'Leary said the move was made mainly to accommodate the request from Goondiwindi.

"If it's a success though, I'll be requesting more Friday night games," he said.

"It'd be great to see more, the only thing holding clubs back would be the travel required. It would take pressure of the TRL officials though, they're stretched pretty thin on Saturday and Sunday as it is."

A grade coach Phil Econmidis said the side was the strongest they'd put together so far this season.

"We've won one and lost one so far, which is not good enough in my book," he said.

"But if we can find some consistency and start fielding the same team on a regular basis we should start stringing a few together."

Back in for the Cowboys are Gary Ellery, Joey Fuimauno, Dan Murphy and Adam Fischer.

Mick Bloomfield will captain from lock and Paul Cantwell will play from half back.

On-field discipline was a key according to Economidis.

"We had a penalty count of 16 to 2 against us last game, you won't win a game of marbles with a penalty count like that against you," he said.

"Goondiwindi will be a tough match, we'll be a force to be reckoned with but that doesn't automatically guarantee a positive result."

Game times for Friday night are; under 18s from 5.40pm, reserve grade from 7pm and A grade from 8.30pm.

A full bar and canteen will run throughout the night.
