Friendly rivalry on race track all in good fun
WARWICK local John Wishart has been racing longer than he can remember.
Wishart was in action at Morgan Park Raceway at the weekend for round 3 of the Queensland Motor Racing Championships, driving his 1972 model Alfa Romeo GTV2000, which he has owned since 1974.
After moving from the Gold Coast almost a decade ago, Wishart has become a regular driver at the track and has formed a friendly rivalry with Teresa Campbell, the aunt of up-and-coming Warwick star Matt Campbell.
"I've been having good battles with Teresa all season," Wishart said.
"It's all about just having fun. There are no sheep stations involved.
"But we pick on each other. It's a friendly rivalry which has developed on the track.
"It's just two locals having a ball."
Wishart's battles with Teresa are not his only interactions with the Campbell family.
"I gave Matt (Campbell) his first drive in a proper built race car," he said.
"He was probably about 14 or 15 at the time.
"It all snowballed from there and I've really enjoyed watching his success.
"He's certainly got talent. He can drive anything."
Wishart had a reasonable weekend, qualifying seventh and holding that position throughout the race.
"I'm not the fastest," Wishart said.
"I've gone alright for an old car and an old fella.
"My car is the only one here with an engine size under two litres."
He said while he always wanted to win races, he was in it purely for the enjoyment.
"I just enjoy the atmosphere and the people," he said.
"I've made a lot of friends through racing that I'll never lose.
"As I said, it's just all about having fun."
Wishart was one of 130 drivers in action at Morgan Park at the weekend.
