Frock up for race day in Warwick this weekend
IT'S the ideal time to have a punt and dress in your best with the Warwick RSL Memorial Club Race Day taking place tomorrow.
Five races will be run throughout the meet, including the revived Long Tan Cup.
Warwick Turf Club secretary Kristen Doyle said the Cup was stopped for a few years but was reinstated in 2012 and has been a fixture on the racing calendar in April ever since.
"It's enjoyable because a lot of the older generation come along, we try to get the RSL to invite all their members and guests,” Mrs Doyle said.
Residents of all ages are invited to attend, with families also welcome to enjoy the relaxed racing day and see the horses close up.
An Arabian horse race will also be run after the last official race.
Mrs Doyle said the club was approached by the Australasian Racing Association to host the race to help promote the organisation.
"It's an opportunity to see a different breed of horse and you can compare it to the thoroughbred,” Mrs Doyle said.
Twenty annual attendees will be making a trip from the Sunshine Coast for the meet, who have done so for over 10 years.
Mrs Doyle said a group from the Oak Tree Retirement Village would also be attending, after a successful day trip last year.
It promises to be a great day of country racing before the track starts the Battle of the Bush series in May.
Mrs Doyle encouraged people to grab a group of friends and enjoy a day out.
"There will be hot food in the canteen, the bars operating and TAB and bookmakers on site,” she said.
Attendees are welcome to bring a picnic rug, but there will also be tables and chairs available as well as seating in the pavilion.
Gates will open at 11am at 170 Victoria St and the first race will take place at 1.25pm.
Admission costs $10 with children under 13 free.
Pensioners and children aged 14-17 are half price.
Warwick RSL members can enter for free.
