From a crane to a race car

COLIN Larsen puts plenty of distance between his work, home and play.

He is a crane operator on an oil rig off the coast of Western Australia, his home is in Ballarat, Victoria, and his sport is at Morgan Park Raceway in Warwick.

Larsen works three weeks on and three weeks off, which will only give him three chances out of a possible 11 to follow his sporting dream this year.

He started round 2 of the Queensland Motor Racing Championships on Saturday with a fifth in class before recording two thirds yesterday.

"This is my fourth race meeting at Morgan Park and I am hoping for a trophy today," Larsen said as he returned to the pits after his final race yesterday.

He did receive a trophy for third.

The car, a Falcon XY GT, stays in Brisbane at the home of close friend Simon Trapp.

He has his ute and trailer to transport the car and for each trip north, he drives one way and flies the other.

If the ute and trailer are in Queensland, he flies to Brisbane to transport his car to Warwick and then tow the racing car back for Melbourne. The next time, he will drive up and fly home.

When asked "why motor racing?", he said "why not?".

"I enjoy the social side of the sport and have been involved in the sport since the age of 12," he said.

"This is my first racing car."

The weekend meeting was organised by the MG Car Club of Queensland and attracted 105 drivers.

Club president David Robinson said his group had been organising an annual race meeting since the early 1960s.

"We started at Lakeside, then went to QR and have been holding our meeting in Warwick since the state championships started more than a decade ago," he said.

"The club will be here to run a meeting a year as long as the state championships are being held."

The weekend meeting went well despite a late start on Saturday due to heavy fog.

Some of the same drivers will return on July 13-14 for the National Historic Meeting at Morgan Park, one of the major meetings of the year.

Warwick drivers Teresa Campbell and John Wishart had a bit of friendly rivalry midfield in group N with only a split second between them at the weekend.
