From the paddock to state politics

SCOTS PGC student Fraser Peterson feels agriculture is an area often overlooked in parliament, so he has decided to do something about it.

The Year 11 student was earlier this month chosen to be the Southern Downs electorate's representative in the Queensland Youth Parliament, where he has since taken up the portfolio of agriculture, environment and resources.

The Queensland Youth Parliament is made up of 96 young Queenslanders, with one representative from each electorate - as in Queensland Parliament.

Fraser, who lives on a 6500-acre property near Killarney, said he wanted to make a difference.

"I heard on the radio that you could apply," he said.

"I applied and then early this month I found out I got in, which is pretty exciting.

"I feel agriculture does not get as much attention from the government as it probably should.

"I want to draw attention to agriculture and some of the issues."

Fraser said the role meant he would take trips to Parliament House, while Member for the Southern Downs and Queensland Opposition Leader Lawrence Springborg will help mentor him.

"It's great to be able to have Lawrence Springborg as a mentor," he said.

"There probably aren't too many people better to have as a mentor in Queensland Parliament.

"The main thing he has said to me is just to keep going if you want to get into Parliament."

As part of his commitments, Fraser will travel to Brisbane for Youth Parliament once a week, before spending one week there in September.
