From zero to Palmerin St pillar in two decades

FROM the window of his second-storey Palmerin St office, Warren Webster can see the small shopfront he first occupied when he joined Elders Insurance 20 years ago.

When he started out, he and then-franchise owner Bob Stein shared a single cubicle at the insurance agency, battling competing ringing phones and space limitations.

But over the past two decades the business has grown to employ three full-time staff, including Mr Webster, and service more than 1000 clients.

Mr Webster dreamed of running a business on the town's main street when he moved here 32 years ago.

After taking over the business from Mr Stein in 2007, he reached his goal and runs the large office with multiple rooms above the ANZ bank on Palmerin St.

Mr Webster said the team started from zero and had overcome changes to the economy, drought and floods to become an established Warwick business.

"The local service was the big thing, people were used to a call centre and not seeing a face," Mr Webster said.

"That was the key offering, personalised service that people weren't getting anywhere else."

Mr Webster has seen Warwick change over his time in the town including the expansion of Rose City Shoppingworld.

With Toowoomba and Brisbane swelling in population, Mr Webster said Warwick would also continue to expand.

"Warwick's a good place to live and doesn't have the problems you see in Brisbane, it's quite relaxed," he said.
