Frosty week ahead as temps plummet again
GET your jumpers and beanies out, the winter chill is set to return to the Southern Downs this week with frosts and sub-zero temperatures forecast.
While the region has enjoyed warmer than average conditions in recent days, temperatures are expected to plummet as winter weather once again takes hold.
The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting temperatures to drop to just 1 degree today in the Rose City, and into negative figures in Stanthorpe by Wednesday.
Forecaster Mark Trenorden said the fine and cooler conditions were expected to begin today.
"We'll start to see cold mornings and fine sunny days," he said.
"Apart from a slight chance of a frost this morning in Warwick, there will be colder and frosty mornings for the second half of the week."
While daytime temperatures are expected to remain around the June average of 18 degrees, the night time temperatures will be below the average of five degrees.
Even towns that are traditionally warmer are expecting icy mornings this week, with Goondiwindi forecast to sink to 1 degree on Friday.
Stanthorpe will still be the coldest place in the state this week, with three of the next four mornings expected to see temperatures below zero.
The forecast temperatures are still relatively warm compared to the record for the coldest June temperatures - minus 6.6 degrees recorded in Warwick on June 26, 1971, and minus 10.6 degrees in Stanthorpe on June 23, 1961.
