Funding stumbling block for Allora signage

WHILE Southern Downs Regional Council has thrown their support behind a proposed plan to add colourful new signs to Allora, they don't plan on directly funding the project.

The proposed signs, which would be used to highlight Allora's historical links to Mary Poppins, are the colourful idea of a small group of Allora residents.

While most of the councillors at Wednesday's meeting were in favour of the signs, they sighted a number of issues related to the prospect of funding the project.

Issues such as copyright, budget constraints and possible added costs of erecting the signs were all factors in council's decision.

Councillors voted in support of the proposal, but suggested council look at supplying the funding through a new Grants to Community Organisations policy.

Allora-based Cr Glyn Rees said he was very much in favour of the signs.

"Allora is considered the gateway to the north," he said. "I would happily bring them to fruition - they are very attractive and highlight the heritage of Allora."

The group of ladies behind the project wrote to council CEO Andrew Roach seeking help to fund the signs, which are costed at $3850 each and would be placed to the north and south of Allora.

"They seemed very passionate and keen," Mr Roach told council.

"I don't think it's a very large group - but very passionate all the same."

Cr Rees said the group of ladies took it upon themselves to come up with the idea.

"They represent significant businesses in the area," he said.

The passionate group of ladies - Margaret Hentschel, Sue Stevens, Liz Sparksman, Anne Glass and Kellie Robson - didn't wish to comment until they considered their next course of action.

Stanthorpe-based Cr Vic Pennisi told council while he supported the idea in principle, he thought there was more important signage to be funded.

"I would rather put out money and resources to other signage," he said.

"We need to address the entrances to the Southern Downs - north, south, east and west.

"We need to reinvigorate our signage committee."
