Funny car set for Dragfest this weekend
ROD Bailey will travel from South Ripley with a nitro funny car dubbed Chemical Warfare to delight the crowd in the second round of JP Racing Dragfest this weekend.
Mr Bailey owns one of only two nitro funny cars in Australia.
"We run a fuel mix of 90 per cent nitro methane and 10 per cent methanol,” he said.
"Last year, he raced his Chemical Warfare car in Las Vegas and Pomona in America against teams with budgets of $7million a year.
"We ran personal best times and out qualified some of the locals.”
Warwick District Drag Racing Association vice-president John Loy said the nitro funny car would be the fastest to hit the Warwick Dragway.
"We have never had a nitro funny car at Dragfest,” Mr Loy said.
"Watching it in action will be like a mini earthquake.
"We hope to attract some fans for their first visit to the dragway to watch the funny car.”
Mr Bailey is in his 19th year racing nitro funny cars and has been preparing the car for Dragfest for the past few weeks.
"We have just bought a new transporter which will arrive from Perth this week,” he said.
Mr Bailey owns the car but has a joint partnership with Perth-based driver Anthony Begley to run the funny car.
"I head to Perth twice a year with the car to put on demonstrations and I am keen to help the Warwick association out,” he said.
"It costs us $18,000 for three runs at Willowbank, Sydney and Perth and we are doing two runs in Warwick.
"The nitro fuel cars are the most popular class in the United States but is not a car that is overly promoted in Australia.
"The fuel pump puts through 360 litres a minute, it produces 10,000 horsepower and releases flames three metres into the air.”
The best time for 200m (1/8 mile) for the car is 3.32 seconds at 418kmh.
Bailey operates RAD Motorcycle Shock Repairs in Yeerongpilly, Brisbane.
