Funny man George to bring tuff jokes

HE'S a controlled and out of control madman who is sure to keep Warwick residents laughing.

George Smilovici will be in town for one night only on September 19 to perform his show I'm Tuff at the Warwick RSL.

The Cuban born comedian said his show was not one to miss.

"It's super funny, I've got two great support acts and by the time I get on stage the crowd will be rolling in laughter," he said.

"I suggest they bring some floaties because they will be wetting themselves.

"My MC is a really funny guy from the states, Pete Rosky; he does a lot of material about coming to this country and the differences.

"The other guy is Matty Marr who is from Brisbane, he's a really sweet guy and his comedy is really, really funny."

This new revamped show will be the first time George has performed in the Rose City.

"I always enjoy new places," he said.

"I was in Weipa, Glenn Innes on the weekend and in a couple of weeks I'll go up to Cooktown to do a show up there."

The comedian is more than just a funny man; he was a former high school teacher and is also a bit of a musician.

At the end of every year he returns to Cuba and works on his album

"I play guitar and I write music and that was my first love before I became a comedian.

"Each time I go to Cuba, I record two songs of my own, once I've got about 10 or 12 tracks I'll put out an album."

So, how did this music- loving high school teacher end up on stage making people laugh?

"I just fell into comedy.

"I never thought I'd ever become a comedian."

"While I was a school teacher, I wanted to perform at night at local clubs and I just pushed myself around.

"I saw an ad in the paper in 1980 for the comedy store in Sydney when it first opened.

"I went and auditioned and got a gig there.

"A couple years later some promoter had a brilliant idea of putting on a comic before big rock concerts, and he chose me.

George's first big gig was at the Royal Antler Hotel and he was to perform before Australian rock band Midnight Oil.

"There was like 700 people in this room," he said.

"I walked on stage, nervous as hell; all I could see in front of me was a hairy sea of heads."

The audience started to throw beer cans and bottles at George and he was escorted off stage, only to come back out and try his jokes again.

It was after that particular gig; George decided he needed to make some changes to his routine.

"I thought to myself, I need some material that will shoot them like a machine gun and make them laugh and that's how I cam up with I'm Tuff."

Years down the track and George has since travelled far and wide with his jokes.

Fans can find his band's music ( Descarga En Obispo) on his Sound Cloud and for tickets to his one show in Warwick call the RSL on 4661 1229

"I just think as many people as possible should come along and Warwick better get ready because here I come."
