Furness driven by dreams
TWENTY NINE V8 supercars will start on the grid of tomorrow's Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 and someone who knows what it's like to be on the grid is Warwick's Jamie Furness.
At the beginning of the year, the Daily News reported on Furness's first win on The Mountain. As part of the Bathurst 12-Hour support category, Furness raced his HQ Holden to victory. Furness said it's something he will never forget.
"I was absolutely stoked. It felt extremely special to have taken out my first win at Bathurst," he said.
"It's one of the most famous and challenging tracks in the world and I feel privileged to have raced there, let alone take out a race."
Furness has dreams of progressing into the main game with the V8 Supercars, but he said drivers must learn to crawl before they can walk.
"One day I hope to get there. It's all about moving up through the categories. I'm hoping to get a drive in the V8 ute series," he said.
Not only does Furness race HQ's but he is also a driving instructor at the V8 Race Experience at Queensland Raceway.
Meanwhile, fans right across Australia and around the world will tomorrow be tunning in to Channel 7's coverage of the Bathurst 1000.
Today the V8's hit the track solo in the Top 10 Shootout which will determine the starting grid for the great race.
At 3.25pm yesterday the chequered flag fell on qualifying but Winterbottom was still on it.
Frosty crossed the line and bang, it was second still, not quite an improvement.
Owen had bumped into the Shootout, Dumbrell was knocked out.
Murphy had the Pepsi car flying too, ninth but his last lap jumped him to fourth as Bargwanna crashed at the Dipper on his last flyer. The Jana Living car was badly damaged.
Reynolds appeared from nowhere and jumped from 18th to fourth, bumping Will Davison from the Shootout.
At the time of printing, the Shootout field will be Tander, Winterbottom, Whincup, Reynolds, Murphy, Lowndes, Courtney, Holdsworth, van Gisbergen and Owen.
Toll Holden Racing Team driver Garth Tander topped qualifying for the Bathurst 1000, his 2m07.6640s lap the fastest in the 40-minute session.
"It was a surprising session because it wasn't as fast as everyone expected," said the two-time Bathurst pole-sitter. Catch the V8's on 7 from 6am tomorrow morning.
