Future councillors in the making
YANGAN State School year three and four students visited Southern Downs Regional Council last week to hear about the inner workings of local government for their Civics and Citizenship subjects.
Southern Downs Regional Council Mayor Peter Blundell welcomed the students into the Warwick council chambers and explained the diverse services the council provides to residents and the public.
"I was very impressed by the students' general understanding of the breadth of the council services, and by their willingness to ask questions," he said.
Students' questions covered where the council gets its funding from, the laws the council enforces, how it makes decisions, and how a person would become mayor.
Cr Blundell highlighted the council's Young Leaders program and the range of projects the young leaders undertake each year as ambassadors for the region.
"Whilst most of the students are still a little young to join the program, I encouraged them to think about being a part of the Young Leaders program in the future," Cr Blundell said.
"It's a wonderful opportunity to make a difference in our community, working on a range of projects and events, while being involved in decision making and informing the council about issues that affect young people across the Southern Downs."
He gave the students a guided tour of various operational departments at the council's Warwick administration office.
