Southern Downs represented in Youth Parliament

YOUTH member for Southern Downs Fraser Peterson has joined the debate about key community issues at the 20th YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament in Brisbane.

Fraser was among 90 other young people from 89 Queensland electorates who united in the State's capital to debate youth Bills.

The members, aged between 15 and 25 got involved with the processes of Parliament including taking a seat in the house, debating mock Bills, holding votes on Bills and taking part in mock question time.

The Scots PGC student said the experience had been both rewarding and at times eye-opening.

"The experience was great, to see and meet people from all around Queensland and to hear the issues that were affecting people from different backgrounds," he said.

"It was a bit of an eye-opener to hear just how good some people had it and how bad others did too. It was quiet emotional at times.

"There were first-hand accounts from people who were battling depression, suffered child abuse and one person who was homeless."

Fraser said he was already planning to take part again next year. "I like to try and give back to the program. This being my first year I feel it has given me a lot of confidence in speaking to different people.

Minister for Women and Youth Shannon Fentiman, who opened the four-day Youth Parliament sitting earlier this week, said the program gave young people a unique platform to experience the parliamentary process and have their say on important issues.

"Youth Parliament is a great way for young people to build their skills to influence community and public decision making by equipping them with knowledge of Queensland's parliamentary system," she said.

"It always fantastic to see these young parliamentarians grow their confidence so when they go back to their communities they can inspire other young people to take action on issues they care about."

The Queensland Government has provided the YMCA with more than $60,000 towards the program.

The Youth Parliament was first run in 1995 when a young Kate Jones, now the Minister for Education and Minister for Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games, was the inaugural Youth Premier.

"This demonstrates how far Youth Parliament can take our young people - all the way from the community to the cabinet table," Ms Fentiman said.
