Future of Oakey Bears in TRL hangs in the balance

RUGBY LEAGUE: The fate of Oakey in the TRL hangs on the findings of an audit into the club's finances which is due to be handed down in two weeks.

Oakey officials addressed the Toowoomba Rugby League annual general meeting on Sunday and while they could not vote, they were welcomed to be part of the event.

The TRL has given Oakey two weeks to hand down the findings of an audit into the club's finances before deciding on whether to finish or extend the club's suspension from the competition due to mounting debt and player number concerns.

TRL chairman Brian Gilroy, who was returned unopposed to the position for a second season, revealed a decision on Oakey's future would only be made after assessing the audit.

He was buoyed by Oakey's optimism.

"It will very much depend on what the audit says,†he said.

"They spoke today and they were confident.â€

A draw has not yet been completed as the TRL waits on progress with Oakey, although the season is due to start on March 18.

Discussions regarding the possibility of players dual registering with Intrust Super Cup clubs and TRL teams is also ongoing.

Gilroy revealed there could be players keen to register with the Western Mustangs for the new state-wide under 20s competition before going back to play in the TRL with their regular club but discussions have to be had on that issue.

Meanwhile, Rex Zeeman and Glyn Rees did not seek re-election and have been replaced on the TRL board by Terry Cook.

The former State of Origin representative and TRL radio commentator will join Tony Coonan, Andrew O'Brien, Adrian Suey, Justin Roach, Mick Merchant, Greg Platz and Gilroy on the TRL board.
