Regional growth flags vital benefit
IF THE people of Queensland get their way, half of the state will be living in the Southern Downs and other regional towns in 30 years' time.
The goal is one of many outlined in the working draft of The Queensland Plan: A 30-year vision for Queensland, which was released at the weekend.
But it is this particular goal which has Southern Downs Mayor Peter Blundell impressed.
Cr Blundell, along with several representatives from the region, was heavily involved in the process, attending summits and meetings during the course of the year.
"The plan is somewhat different in that it focuses on what Queenslanders want, what Queenslanders feel success looks like and how Queenslanders would describe that success," Cr Blundell said.
"All the foundations will offer opportunity and improved services for our region, however particularly noteworthy is the region's foundation which aims to achieve half of Queensland's population living outside of south-east Queensland within the next 30 years.
"This, of course, has major implications for areas such as the Southern Downs.
"We experience benefits from location, amenity, productivity and services and it isn't hard to envisage us being an extremely attractive and appealing place for people to relocate to."
With 15 other bold targets outlined in the plan, including ensuring all children have basic literacy and numeracy skills and having the lowest incidence of preventable diseases in the nation, Minister for Environment and Heritage Protection Andrew Powell said the bar was set high.
"We have the power to transform and lead our state to meet future challenges head on, and throughout 2013 Queenslanders rose to the occasion to address these challenges," Mr Powell said.
"The working draft is based on a compilation of what Queenslanders have told us they want in 30 years' time. We don't expect everyone will agree with these preliminary targets, but we now have a great opportunity as a community to realise the future we want."
Despite the big challenge, Cr Blundell is confident the plan will be successful if everyone works together. The working draft is online and residents are still able to have their say on the plan.
Member for the Southern Downs Lawrence Springborg encouraged everyone to log on and have a say.
"This government is demonstrating great vision and including each Queensland community is the best way to design a pathway for our shared future," he said.
"This will shape our region and if the plan is achieved, we could see Warwick transform in 30 years.
"Southern Downs had some great representation with the delegates that participated in the plan and now it's time to have a look at what they have come up with."
The working draft can be viewed by visiting http://www.qld.gov.au/queensland plan and will be available for review between December 8, 2013, and March 7, 2014.
The final copy is expected be released next year.
