Gala day for Redbacks on Saturday at WCU Oval
AUSSIE RULES: After being on the road for the past seven weeks, the Warwick Redbacks will host a gala day of Aussie rules at Warwick Credit Oval on Saturday.
The first games will be junior fixtures from 8am when the combined Warwick and Lockyer Valley teams, the Red D's, play University.
The first of the senior games will be at 11.50am when the combined women's team from Warwick and Lockyer Valley, the Demonic Redbacks, host South Burnett.
Warwick and Lockyer Valley are still seeking their first win of the season.
Redbacks player Lisa Elliott said her team was improving each week.
"It is a disadvantage for the whole team not to be able to train together,” she said.
"Our girls in the Demonic Redbacks team have a kick around at training in Warwick.”
Warwick has just recruited two new players for the women's team, Latina and Sophie Robertson. Both have played in the past fortnight for the Demonic Redbacks.
Naomi Elliott was judged the best of ground for Demonic Redbacks in the loss to South Toowoomba on Saturday at the Concordia oval in Toowoomba.
Lisa said the club was keen to build up women's numbers in the next two years with a view to fielding a standalone team in the competition in 2019.
"Any women keen for a game can join up now for the rest of the season.”
The Warwick men play Dalby Swans in the match of the day which starts some time after the women's game on Saturday at Warwick Credit Union Oval.
The men's starting time is down as 3.20pm but there is a move to play the game a little earlier.
See Saturday's Daily News for the final decision on starting time.
The Redbacks men lead the competition by eight points from Dalby but the teams are almost equal on percentage (points scored/points against).
Warwick has a percentage of 236.84 and Dalby 232.02.
Chinchilla player Wayne Webber leads the division 2 scoring with 60 goals.
Warwick pair Kris Millard and Nick Donges are in the top four.
Cameron Peterson is seventh on the list.
After just one game, Ben Heppel is 12th on the list with seven for the Redbacks in last weekend's win against Highfields at Highfields.
The game was his first for the club since winning a premiership with Warwick in division one in 2014.
Andrew Bardsley is captaining the Redbacks side this season and brings plenty of passion to the team.
A number of the premiership-winning players from 2014 are in the team, including star ruckman Alex Cutmore.
Admission free and the canteen will be open. Fans can watch the game from the clubhouse.
Any prospective players for any grades are welcome to phone club secretary Naomi Elliott on 0410399316.
