WHEN politicians thank volunteers in their victory speeches, it isn't just for the sake of it.
These men and women donate hours, sometimes days of their time over election periods, for the simple fact of standing for what they believe in.
One of these selfless women is Brenda Black, who has been helping out on polling day for over half a century, and said volunteering was about making a difference.
"I personally believe that if you want that person to succeed, you have to work for it,” Mrs Black said.
Mrs Black has been in Warwick for 17 years after previously living in Beaudesert and Sydney.
This year she volunteered her services to the campaign of independent candidate Rob Mackenzie.
"I previously volunteered for the LNP until this year, where I've gone with a former LNP member in Rob Mackenzie,” she said.
"I spent nine days at the pre-poll, and there were an amazing number of people going through.”
Mrs Black was stationed at the Warwick West State School booth in the early part of the afternoon, and said it was a friendly atmosphere.
Another volunteer giving her time yesterday was Karen McKechnie, who made the most of some free time to help out the Liberal-Nationals at the WIRAC polling booth.
"I'm a local farmer with sheep and cattle, and with both kids at uni I have some free time to engage in volunteer work in the community,” Mrs McKechnie said.
"I have a strong interest in politics, and applaud anybody in any political group for putting their hand up to help out.
"I also have a keen interest in the future management of Australia, and want the place to be well governed.
"I'd like to see James Lister have a chance to represent our community.
"I think he will be a sincere MP and represent us well.”
