IT was a night 29 years in the making for legendary sports journalist Gerard Walsh, as he formally farewelled the Southern Downs sporting community.

A number of speakers from Walsh's career, both past and present, took to the stage to pay tribute to the man that had become a mate to many.

Cowboys coach and host Matt Grew captured the shared sentiment when he thanked Walsh for his unmatched commitment to covering sport stories.

"Every sport in Warwick was covered, didn't matter if it was small or big, everyone in the community got to hear what they were doing, and that was because of you.”

"You cared, you actually cared, and that's what separates you from the rest.”
