Game on for Cowboys
WITH a number of seasoned players pulling on the rugby league jersey and making a comeback in 2012, the Cowboys Club is looking to an expected strong season.
President Don Browne said he looked forward to kicking off the season next year.
"I'm confident the season will be a very good one," he said.
"The football community, in conjunction with A-grade coach Gary Lawrence, is expecting good things.
"Gary and Ryan Kinlyside have been very proactive in signing up players and we look forward to kicking off the new year."
That kick-off will happen on March 24 with the Barrett Shield, although training is expected to begin mid-January.
Browne said a game against Aspley would also be played early in the year.
"We'll be starting training on the second Tuesday in January," he said.
"All players will be welcome to start preparing for the year."
Among them is John Trindall, who is returning from a successful season this year to carry on his good form.
He will be joined by Braydon Hockings, who also played in the A-grade this year.
"He had a wonderful season last year and he will only improve, along with the better quality players we're recruiting," Browne said.
"Another player worthy of mention is Lindsay Locke, and he's had a good year in reserve grade. I'm sure he's going to work hard and make A grade next season."
Under-18 players Ryan Kinlyside and Dale Coombes will also be trying their best to make the A-grade side this year, with Kinlyside signed on to coach the Under 18s.
Fresh from his holiday back home in the UK, Browne said player Garry Ellery is another one to watch this season.
"He will continue on his good form from last year," Browne said.
"It's also good to have Trent Achilles back after 12 months in America. He, along with Paul Cantwell, will give us a strong half back."
The Cowboys is still recruiting players for 2012.
