Gardeners discover daylily delight

GREEN-thumbed garden enthusiasts travelled to Clifton from places such as Pittsworth, Maryvale and Warwick on Saturday for the town's first Daylily Show.

The event was organised by local gardening gurus Linda Smith and Adele Saville.

The women said they had planned to share their love of the flowers with the community for quite some time, and said the weekend event represented a realisation of their dream.

"We had been tossing the idea around for four or five years but it was Linda who finally bit the bullet and set the date," Mrs Saville said.

Mrs Saville said the idea behind the event was to expose people to the simplicity of growing the hardy daylily.

"We just wanted to let people know how to grow daylilies and how easy it is," she said.

"You don't need a lot of water and they grow extremely well in our area."

As chief organiser, Mrs Saville said she was overwhelmed by the amount of support the event received.

"I am just amazed. It has been incredible and I think we are going to make it a yearly event now," she said.

Daylily growers set up stalls at the event to educate visitors and offer the stunning flowers for sale, and Mrs Smith said buyers were snapping them up.

"I think everyone has had good sales because people see these blooms and think, 'I have to have one of those'," Mrs Smith said.

Bob Brazier said the appeal of the daylily for many people was its hardiness.

"They say if you kill daylilies, it's time to give up gardening," he said.
