Retirees Spring into action for Horticultural Competition
IF you fancy yourself a green thumb then the Warwick Horticultural Society Spring Gardening Competition may just be the contest for you.
Oaktree Retirement Village Warwick has two entrants in this year's competition - the village gardens and those grown by residents Sid and June Paskins.
A crop farmer for 53 years, Mr Paskins won third place for his vegetable and flower gardens last year.
"I've always been a keen gardener," Mr Paskins said.
"I don't do it just for me - I like to have it for the residents and visitors to the village.
"It's encouraging to see a nice garden."
Oaktree manager Mary O'Neill said she was pleased to see the couple and village compete again this year.
"We're very proud of our village," she said.
"It's a country town so it's important to have a nice gardens and it gives it a good sense of community."
There's still plenty of time to enjoy the spoils of spring and enter your home-grown garden in the contest held on October 5.
Warwick Horticultural Society President Graham Gillam said entries for the competition had already started flowing in.
He said the contest was still going strong as one of three events hosted by the society next month.
"We've had a few entries already but there's plenty of time to get in," Mr Gillam said.
"Judging is October 5 leading up to spring flower festival."
With 18 classes to enter, Mr Gillam said the competition catered to gardeners of all skill levels.
"We have various different classes from a rose class and Australian natives, and a courtyard class for people with smaller gardens," he said.
"Schools in the district can join in, and first-timers can join a novice class."
