Gay is Warwick champion and in overseas Hall of Fame
GAY Erskine is one of the monthly Daily News/Warwick Credit Union Senior Sports Star monthly winners for 2016 after winning her sixth successive ladies championship at the Warwick Rose Squash Club.
Erskine has won nine ladies championships in all, but is still a long way from equalling her tally of 15 national championships in Zimbabwe, where she is part of the Hall of Fame for squash.
She was based in Zimbabwe when she was ranked no.4 in the world and played against Heather McKay, a sportswoman ranked with all-time greats in men or women's ranks in any sport.
Squash is a strong sport in her household, with her husband and two sons all playing regularly down the years in weekly Warwick fixtures at St Mary's Squash Court in Guy St.
Erskine isn't fazed coming up against a lot of men in weekly fixtures.
"I love the competition, age is irrelevant. Nutrition is very important as you get older, if you give yourself the right nourishment, it helps reduce the aches and pains.”
She is one of 11 monthly winners to be honoured at the annual awards dinner on March 20 at Kings at the Warwick RSL.
As a monthly winner, Erskine wins $100 from the Warwick Credit Union and two complimentary tickets to the awards dinner.
