Gay union is now official

ERIN and Danielle Mackenzie always knew they wanted to be together forever, and yesterday they made it official at a civil partnership ceremony outside the Maryborough Courthouse, in front of their closest friends and family.

It had been a long wait for the Maryborough couple, who have been in a dedicated and loving relationship for more than 10 years.

Yesterday, the couple declared their love for each other to the world and formally formed a legally binding civil partnership - the first of its kind in Maryborough.

The civil partnership wasn't just a declaration of love, Erin said, it was a way of knowing they could support each other no matter what.

"I wanted to be able to protect Danielle," Erin said.

"Having the civil partnership means that I will be her next of kin and she will be mine.

"It makes us feel safe, knowing that we will legally be there for each other if something bad happens."

The two women exchanged their vows at an intimate garden ceremony in Maryborough yesterday, though Danielle admitted this wasn't the first time the two had taken the plunge together.

"About five years ago we had a ceremony," Danielle said.

"It wasn't legal, but it was a symbol of our love."

About two year's ago, Erin and Danielle took the next step to cement their relationship, with Danielle legally taking Erin's last name.

"We had been waiting for the chance to get married." Erin said.

"But we were very happy to have a civil partnership.

"It means we will always be there for each other."
