Geitz gears up for third Commonwealth Games
NETBALL: Allora athlete Laura Geitz will play in her third Commonwealth Games after her selection today in the Australian Diamonds team.
Geitz returned to top level netball last month when she was invited to a Diamonds camp at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra and was then added to the national squad.
She missed the 2016 and 2017 international seasons as she and husband Mark Gilbride welcomed son Barney.
Geitz is one of five players in the team which won gold at the Glasgow games in 2014. She won Commonwealth Games silver four years earlier at New Delhi.
One of her teammates from Glasgow, Caitlin Bassett, will captain the team at the Gold Coast games. Gabi Simpson is vice captain.
Geitz is a games ambassador and will carry the torch in the Queens Baton in Warwick on March 29. She carried the Olympic Torch in Warwick before the 2000 Olympics.
While Geitz was introduced to netball at Allora State School, she started playing the game seriously at Scots PGC College.
Leanne Olsen was her first coach at Scots PGC and recalls the athletic ability of Geitz standing out from the start.
"She was a coaches' dream and would listen to everything you said,” Olsen said.
"It is a great credit to Laura and to the sport that she could become a Mum and then be able to return to a professional sport,” Olsen said.
"I am excited for Laura and excited that I have tickets for the netball semi finals at the Commonwealth Games.”
