Geitz who? Schoolgirl smashes netball icon's record
ATHLETICS: Assumption College student Denika Murray has broken a long jump record set by Laura Geitz at the Border Athletics Carnival in 2000.
Geitz starred in athletics and swimming before she started playing netball and going on to captain Australia.
While a student at Allora State School in 2000, she jumped 4.74m to set a new long jump record.
Yesterday, Murray jumped 5.44m to break the record by 70cm.
"It is hard to believe I have broken a record set by Laura,” Murray said.
She has represented Darling Downs in football but lists athletics as her main sport.
Murray is trained twice a week by Bec Rogers from Rogers Sports Coaching.
She was winning most of her events at the Border sports and also set a record in the 13 years 200m.
The Assumption College student ran 27.5 seconds to win the 200m.
Her time was 0.3 of a second ahead of former record holders, S Leonard (Goondiwindi) in 1979 and Lucy Bourke (Scots PGC) last year.
The Warwick All Schools Athletics Carnival for 13-19 years students will be on Thursday at Briggs Oval at Scots PGC College.
The Darling Downs School Athletics trials are at The Glennie School (track) on August 29 and at Hamilton Oval (field) at Warwick High on August 30.
