Ghillies by the dozen at dance competition

SCOTTISH highland dancers will be flocking to Warwick next week to participate in the Inverness Highland Dance Studio competition.

Principal of the studio Marlene McBean said they were expecting up to 100 performers.

"There will be dancers coming from all over, including Brisbane, Roma and even Toowoomba," she said.

The competition will be held on Sunday, April 21 beginning at 8.30am at Warwick West State school.

"From 8.30am beginners will be dancing," Mrs McBean said.

"After lunch will be the senior dancers."

Dancers range across many different experience levels including children as young as four and performers as old as 60.

"Even though their ages may be different everyone performs the dances correctly," Mrs McBean said.

"Highland dancing is very technical but even the youngest performers do it well."

There is a small entry fee into the competition but Mrs McBean promises there will be plenty to keep everyone entertained.

"We encourage locals to come along and support the event," she said.

"There will be live pipers playing as well as the dancers.

"It's a great opportunity for those who love dancing, costumes or even have a Scottish heritage to have a fun day out."

Mrs McBean said previous events had been well-supported by the community.

"This will be the sixth competition we've held."

The Inverness Highland Dance Studio would like to thank all its sponsors.

"Whether it's been cash donations or services it means a lot to us," Mrs McBean said.
