Girls on fire for Super Saturday 2
RUGBY UNION: Lisa Croft will captain the Warwick women's sevens team in the qualifying final at Dalby this afternoon.
As minor premiers, Warwick will sit out the first two of four sevens games today.
A Warwick victory against the winner of the Dalby and Bears game will secure the Water Rats a spot in the September 2 grand final.
A loss will put Warwick into an elimination final on grand final day, with the winner securing the second spot for the grand final.
Coach Lauren Quinlan said, due to the start of the finals, the squad was restricted to 12 players.
"The captain was announced at training on Thursday,” she said.
"Lisa plays in the middle and is a great leader. She joined right at the start of the season.”
Croft, Kathleen Keogh, Emily Byrne and Tshinta Kendall are the four regular kickers for Warwick.
Two of the leading try scorers this season are Kendall and Keeley Mooney.
Last year, Kendall played for the Queensland Indigenous side in the nationals in Perth while Keeley Mooney and her sister, Mariah, travel from Tenterfield to play.
"The Mooney sisters drove from Tenterfield for Thursday night training,” Quinlan said.
Eloise Wiles is unavailable due to the flu but will be available for selection on grand final day in a fortnight.
Some other players are unavailable today but there were 10 players at training on Thursday night.
"We had a really good training run, the girls worked hard,” Quinlan said.
"This season, we have beaten every team in the competition.
"Our toughest games of the season have been against Dalby, a team with a lot of power across the park.”
Sevens rugby is usually played in seven-minute halves but the grand final will have 10-minute halves.
After each try, the team which scores has a chance to attempt a conversion by drop kick.
Warwick B-grade men's coach Vlad Savovski will travel to Dalby to be the team strapper.
All men's semis will be played at Dalby today in what has been dubbed Super Saturday 2.
Goondiwindi and Dalby will play in the A-grade qualifying final at 3.30pm while Condamine and Rangers will play in the elimination final at 1.45pm.
Women's games will be played on field 2.
