Giteau says adieu to French rugby

WALLABIES playmaker Matt Giteau is leaving French club Toulon at the end of the European season to play in Japan.

Giteau announced the move via his Instagram account on Monday, farewelling the club's fans in French.

Fox Sports translated the text to read: "I want to announce that at the end of this season I will leave to play in Japan.

"Making this decision was the toughest of my rugby career but it is the best for my family to be closer to Australia.

"I want to say a big thank you to the players (who I have made lifelong friendship with), coaches, president and staff behind the scenes since 2011.

"I owe a lot to you.

"I also want to say a big thank you to the supporters, Toulonnais, who will remain in my heart for life.

"The time spent in Toulon was the best period of my rugby career.

"My main goal now is to win titles for this historic club. #ToujoursToulonnais #MerciEncore."

The 34-year-old has played 103 Tests for Australia.

He broke down during last year's humiliating Bledisloe Cup defeat in Sydney after just 10 minutes and while he's yet to make an official call on his Test career it's considered to be all but over.

Giteau, who helped guide Australia to the 2015 World Cup final from inside centre, won three European Champions Cups at Toulon, playing outside Jonny Wilkinson.
