Newman moves to sack chairman

"RECKLESS" spending and a poor environmental run have prompted Queensland Premier Campbell Newman's move to sack Gladstone Ports Corporation Chairman Ian Brusasco.

Mr Brusasco said he found the Premier's claims insulting.

Addressing State Parliament on Thursday, Mr Newman said the GPC allowed $766,775 in their 2011-2012 budget for corporate entertainment, advertising, sponsorship, donations etc.

By the end of the financial year, the GPC had blown $1,047,490 in those categories.

And the GPC had allocated $1,052,718 for entertainment, advertising and sponsorship for the next financial year.

"This government has said we need to cut these things by at least 20% and they serve this up to the government," Mr Newman said.

"It is unacceptable and it will not be tolerated. That is why there will be a comprehensive change in the management of Gladstone port."

The comments follow water turbidity levels exceeding the allowable limit within the Gladstone Harbour last week.

Mr Newman attributed part of the reason for the GPC shake-up to environmental concerns.

"After meeting with the fishermen in Gladstone, I am very concerned about what has gone on there and the way the whole environment issue has been handled," he said in parliament.

Outgoing chairman Mr Brusasco told the Gladstone Observer on Thursday: "If you want to see if there has been environmental mismanagement in the harbour, you should speak to the coal and gas companies."
