'Glam' up for fashion stakes
FOR some the Cup day fashion is more important that the racing itself with Warwick fashionistas' outfits weeks, if not months, in the making.
Of course the $5000 prize money for the Fashions on the Field contest is a sweetener but just being able to glam it up for one day is prize enough.
The Daily News caught up with some couture savvy Warwick-ites for their top tips on race day fashion.
"We'll be looking for well-accessorised ladies, headwear is a must for the races," she said.
"It's spring so we'll be looking for bright colours, fresh and floaty fashions.
"A definite no-no is a felt hat for the ladies."
Katie said bright and contrasting colours are very "in" this season, though the classic black and white look is ever-popular.
"You can never go wrong with it," she said.
Other fashion faux pas for ladies today would be inappropriate footwear (absolutely no thongs and no shoe-carrying) and heavy fabrics.
"Even if it's a bit chilly, be mindful it's a Spring race meeting," Katie said.
Katie and her fellow judges will be scouting Allman Park from midday looking for the best dressed.
There is a classic and contemporary category.
For Daily News' Emma Channon vibrant colours are the go this Warwick Cup, with orange her top pick of the day.
"Orange is bright and friendly and would look good on anyone," she said.
"It's nice to be able to use bright colours for a day at the races, setting it aside from day-to-day life like work wear."
Daily News' Jenna Cairney said with the huge success of Downtown Abbey, period and vintage fashion would be a winner on Cup day.
"Soft colours, delicate detail and intricate accessories will definitely look classy and timeless," Jenna said.
"Pale pastels look wonderful in Spring time and you don't have to worry about having pasty skin to match - porcelain sorry, not pasty."
The third category is that of the couples and Katie has some stern advice for Warwick males.
"Males must be well-groomed," she said
"I think for the guys, it's all about vintage retro.
"We're talking a handkerchief in the pocket and suspenders.
"It's important the couple's outfit corresponds in some way too."
Seth Jameson and his partner Jacqueline Henricks won the best dressed couple at the Picnic Races earlier this year.
"If you're going to wear something, you have to wear it with confidence," Seth, the advocate of the pink shirt, said.
