Glenn chasing sidecar record

GLENN O'Brien will be shooting for six-and-out when he hits Maryborough Speedway for the Australian sidecar speedway championship this weekend.

The 49-year-old grandfather from Perth has announced this will be the final time he will contest the national final.

So what better way to go out than with a record sixth Australian title?

"That's the plan," O'Brien, who will team up with Aaron Maynard, said.

"There's been a lot of sacrifices and a lot of hard work, but after this I'm going to get off the national scene.

"I want to concentrate on other things like my grandson who is now getting into BMX and junior solos."

The defending Australian champion will go head-to-head with another sidecar legend, Darrin Treloar.

Treloar, the reigning world champion, also has five Australian titles to his name, but O'Brien felt a surprise packet could emerge from the field.

"No one has ever won six (titles) so we're both very keen to win," he said.

"But there are some other really good drivers around.

"I reckon about four or five riders can win it, it won't be just a two-man show."

This will be O'Brien's first foray to Maryborough, but he said his team were well prepared for the new challenge.

"I reckon about 85% of us have never competed on this track before, including myself, so it's going to be a new experience for a lot of us," he said.

"We've never had a problem to adapting to new tracks so we'll go and do our best and hopefully come away with the title."

Racing will be held over two nights with practise on Saturday and the grand final on Sunday.
