Going out on a high
SCOTT Beard wants to retire from rugby league on a high, even if it doesn't include a last minute try like Darren Lockyer scored.
Beard first played for the Cowboys in 1996 in the under-17 grade when the Noel Loudon-coached side made the semis.
He was in the A-grade side which went down to Oakey in the 1999 grand final before playing A-grade for Ferny Grove in Brisbane for seven seasons.
Beard won grand finals in 2000 and 2001 before moving his painting business back to his hometown in 2008.
He returned to Cowboys colours in 2009 and planned to retire along with close mate Nick Owens after a season of reserve-grade in 2011.
"We drew with Dalby and beat Gatton mid-season and looked a finals chance before finishing at the bottom of the table," Beard said.
"I want to retire on a high and am real keen to play my last season in A grade. The quality in the squad is unreal."
