Gold Coast Titans hail Sezer as late try sinks Broncos
UNFASHIONABLE NRL competition leaders Gold Coast came from behind to account for the Brisbane Broncos 12-8 in a Queensland derby war of attrition at Cbus Super Stadium last night.
With the Broncos clinging to an 8-6 lead deep in the second term, Titans pivot Adam Sezer pounced on the dregs of an Albert Kelly bomb spilt in goal by Broncos fullback Ben Barber, much to the delight of the Gold Coast section of the 22,000 crowd.
Both sides missed a number of wonderful try-scoring chances before Brisbane halfback Ben Hunt started and finished a splendid effort to provide the Broncos with a hard-fought 6-0 half-time buffer. But a Hunt grubber kick midway through the second session led to a brilliant 100m try for Titans fullback David Mead, who gobbled up the ball and revealed electrifying speed.
Meanwhile, the South Sydney Rabbitohs outmuscled the Penrith Panthers 18-2 in a torrid affair at a wet Sportingbet Stadium.
Souths winger Nathan Merritt notched his 145th touchdown to break the all-time try-scoring record for the Rabbitohs.
Gold Coast Titans 12 (Adam Sezer, David Mead tries; Adam Sezer 2 goals) def Brisbane Broncos 8 (Ben Hunt try; Corey Parker 2 goals).
South Sydney Rabbitohs 18 (Nathan Merritt, Kyle Turner, Kirisome Auva'a tries; Adam Reynolds 3 goals) def Penrith Panthers 2 (Jamie Soward goal).
