Gold for Charlotte as Allora thrower jets in to games
OLYMPICS: Stanthorpe can claim a connection to an Olympic gold medallist after the Australian Pearls' 24-17 victory against New Zealand in the final of the rugby sevens at Rio de Janeiro.
Charlotte Caslick, who lives in Brisbane, scored the last try for Australia in the gold medal victory this morning, Australian time, after scoring three tries in another game.
She was rated one of the best players in the tournament.
Her parents Don and Tracy and extended family have a long association with the Stanthorpe area.
Don was involved in many sports clubs when living on the Granite Belt.
Denny in Rio
ALLORA thrower Matthew Denny touched down in Rio de Janeiro earlier today after being in a training camp in Florida with the Australian athletics team.
He competes in the discus preliminaries from 10pm Friday and if he finishes in the top 12 will compete in the final at 11.50pm Saturday. His coach Grahame Pitt is with him in Rio.
Last week, Denny's parents, John and Karen, were presented with a cheque for $3040 after outstanding community support for a fundraising effort that was supported by the Warwick Credit Union, Daily News, Allora Regional Sports Museum and Southern Downs Regional Council.
