Golden Geitz dazzles for Aussie Diamonds
ALLORA'S Laura Geitz led the Diamonds to a 58-40 win over arch rivals New Zealand in the netball gold medal match.
It was Australia's first Commonwealth Games netball gold medal in 12 years.
The result was also the biggest margin in a gold medal match since the introduction of netball to the Games in 1998.
"To win by that much and against the Kiwis is a little bit surreal, but I am absolutely over the moon with the performance we put out," Geitz said post-match.
The result gains revenge for losses to New Zealand in the 2006 and 2010 gold medal matches, the last of which Geitz was part of.
"The last two minutes, it did start to sink in that it's been 12 long years since Australia had the gold medal," Geitz said.
"It's incredible and to come out and put out a performance like that ... we've built all week and that was by far our best game and it's scary how great this team can be."
Allora Sports Museum president Perry Cronin already has plans to celebrate Geitz's triumph.
"It's unbelievable," Cronin said.
"We've got plans to organise a welcome-home dinner with Laura and also (fellow Allora athletes) Matt Denny and Greg Holmes.
"Hopefully Laura will bring home her programs and those kind of things and we would love to get her gold medal in town at some point."
Cronin was full of praise for Geitz's performances at the Games.
"She was unbelievable," he said.
"Not only in her performances, but the way she led the team.
"The side was 11 points up at one stage and she got them into the mindset that they were 11 points down so they kept their hunger.
"They more or less played as if they were 11 points down from there on."
