Parched inland areas splashing around after downpours

INLAND towns have experienced heavy downpours over the past two days.

The Central Highlands and Coalfields in particular have recorded up to 60mm of rain, Bureau of Meteorology Townsville senior forecaster Doug Fraser said.

Mr Fraser said not much rain had fallen in Mackay in comparison, with the city only receiving about 4 mm.

"Clermont picked up 62mm up until 9am (yesterday)," he said.

"And there's been a bit more since then.

"There's been quite a few falls around 60mm for this time of year."

Mr Fraser said there had also been thunderstorms, which should ease off by today.

"There's been lightning associated with storms," he said.

"Inland falls have been heavier because of the heat building up and an upper level low pressure system which is responsible for the thunderstorms.

"The upper level system will have weakened out by tomorrow (today) and Wednesday showers will ease with further isolated showers by Thursday."

He said things should clear up completely in a few days, although boaties could still expect windy conditions out at sea.

"It's been a bit windy for boating people," Mr Fraser said.

"Around 15-20 knots will continue for tomorrow (today) and even 25 knots could be seen.

"Then it should drop right out."

Mr Fraser said Capricornia and the Fitzroy River catchment all had "pretty good falls".
