Good weather for Water Rats
THE Warwick Water Rats made the most of wet conditions to win four from four and retain the Country Cup at Risdon Oval on Saturday.
Captain Dave Young said he hadn't played in worse conditions.
"Everyone had a great day," Young said.
"We only conceded one try in the carnival."
Warwick won the Country Cup last season at Beaudesert and beat Bears, Chinchilla, Kyogle and Beaudesert on Saturday.
Young said the closest game was against a Beaudesert team that included former Wallabies international Garrick Morgan.
"Garrick played well for someone in his 40s," Young said.
"We just defended well all day."
New recruit Adrian Von Spry played open side flanker for Warwick and won player of the carnival.
Michael Marshall played his first game for the club and was strong at fullback and wing.
Jeb Jerome has started his third season with the Water Rats and played well in the three quarters.
Young said Matt Wheatley and Coedie Tandy combined well in the centres.
"The forwards worked well together," Young said.
Craig Pettiford is coaching the team for the first time and used a lot of interchange during the game.
While no finals were scheduled, the result of the carnival came down to the last game between Warwick and Beaudesert.
"It was a pretty fiery clash," Young said.
"Everyone dug deep and defended well in the final.
"Beaudesert didn't score in the final but we scored two tries to win the game."
Warwick has started the season with a squad of 25. The first competition game will be on April 6.
Last season, Warwick finished third in the C-grade competition after going down to Chinchilla in the preliminary final.
On Saturday, Warwick beat Chinchilla five tries to nil so the Water Rats' chances look bright this season.
Premiers Goondiwindi are again fielding a side in C-grade.
Warwick will play half its games at home in the Downs competition this season.
More players are welcome at training at 6.30pm each Thursday at Risdon Oval.
