Goodwin to saddle up for shot at Olympics
WARWICK rider David Goodwin has been selected in the showjumping squad for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Goodwin is in a squad of 19 with his horse Warrego Jericho along with Millmerran rider Robert Moffatt.
Last month, Goodwin flew to Europe with Jericho for six months of competition in the run-up to the selection of the Australian team for the World Equestrian Games in Normandy, France.
He is not in the squad of four, with six horses, identified as leading combinations in contention for the Australian team for Normandy but is in the Rio 2016 squad named yesterday for talented combinations who, in principle, may not be ready for the next major international competition, but may be ready for competition for the following Olympic Games.
Westbrook showjumper David Finch, of Finch Farm, has three horses in the National Futures Squad, and was delighted with yesterday's news of Goodwin's selection. "It is great news for the local industry, the horse was bred and trained by David and his family," Finch said.
"He is a very good horseman who has done incredibly well. Jericho is a brave but careful horse.
"David has a good relationship with his horse and did well at the weekend."
Goodwin wrote on Facebook that he couldn't be happier with his first European Show at Oliva in Spain.
The combination went clear in a 1.45m round on Saturday and had one rail down on Sunday on the last fence in the Grand Prix.
While making the Olympic long list for Rio, Goodwin still has plenty of work to do if he wants to convert a position in a squad of 19 in 2014 into a position in a team of four in 2016.
Finch said Australia first had to qualify for the Olympics as the Asia Pacific representative.
Australia has qualified in recent Olympics and was in the top-10 in Beijing. Team member Edwina Tops-Alexander was 10th individually in Beijing and in the top 20 in London.
Millmerran rider Robert Moffatt is also in the Rio squad on Finch Farm Viduka.
The horse was bred at Westbrook and Moffatt received some coaching early in his career from Finch.
