Goondiwindi holds off fast-finishing Warwick
RUGBY UNION: Warwick went down 27-19 to Goondiwindi as part of the annual ladies day at Risdon Oval.
Scots PGC started the event with two wins in sevens against Goondiwindi before the golden oldies’ game.
The Rats forwards demolished the Emus forwards in the scrums and general play, and through this dominance the Rats put the first points on the board with a darting run from Arnie Briel.
Joshua Sharman converted the try, bringing the score to 7–0.
After this, the Emus used their clever kicking game, and the wind which was to their advantage, to get behind the Rats’ line several times and bring the half- time score to 27-7.
After half-time, the Rats went back onto the pitch with a strong resolve and rallied.
They were dominant in the second half, holding on to the ball to have the majority of possession.
The Rats scored two tries through Adrian Spryze and converted one off the boot of Briel.
Besides a few errors, the Rats played well in the second half and showed their potential in the competition.
Player points to Briel (3), Vladimir Savovski (2) and Brad Johnson and Craig Pettiford (1 each).
This weekend the Rats travel to Condamine for the second away game of the season. Training continues 6pm Tuesday and Thursday. – Patrick Black
